CES: ‘Galaxy Note’ Comes to AT&T, ‘Galaxy Nexus’ to Sprint - Tech Trader Daily
By Tiernan Ray
This week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is, predictably, offering up a bunch of news about carriers expanding their selection of phones running on faster 4G cellular connections, using the so-called Long Term Evolution, or LTE, standard, and running Google's (GOOG) "Android" operating system.
AT&T (T) this morning said it will start selling Samsung Electronics's (SSNLF) "Galaxy Note" smartphone, which runs on AT&T's 4G network and has a 5.3-inch display based on active-matrix organic light-emitting diode technology, or AMOLED.
With the substantially larger display, the Note is more like a small tablet computer. It even comes with a stylus, called the "S Pen," for drawing. The note will go on sale "in coming weeks," said AT&T, without disclosing pricing.
AT&T also plans to offer the Samsung "Exhilarate," made from recycled materials; the Samsung "Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD"; the Pantech "Element" tablet computer with 4G connections; and the Sony (SNE) "Xperia ion" smartphone.
And Sprint-Nextel (S), which is just beginning to roll out LTE as part of a massive, multimillion network revamp called "Network Vision," announced it will have 15 LTE devices offered this year, with the first models running on LTE in the first half of this year and the rest coming late in the year as more markets gain LTE coverage. The devices include the Galaxy Nexus and the LG "Viper."
